The silversmith made great silver products. One of the tools the silversmith used was a scribe. A scribe was used to scrape designs in the metal. Most silver pieces were made by pouring melted silver into a mold. When the silver reached about 2,000 degrees, it was poured into the mold. When the silver was cool, it was removed from the mold. Once a casting was made the silversmith would file off rough edges. This technique was called cleaning a casting. Hammers were also important tools for the silversmith. The silversmith would pound the melted silver into its shape. Some hammers would flatten the silver, while the other hammers would make the silver very thin. A hammer was used to pound a piece of steel on the silver. This would force the shape of the silver into the shape of the mold.
